A History of the Chaise Lounge

February 27, 2023 /Posted byBerton Furniture / 532 / 0

The chaise lounge, also known as the chaise longue, is a type of seating that is designed for reclining. The origins of the chaise lounge can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt and Greece, where aristocrats and rulers would recline on benches or couches to dine or relax.

The modern chaise lounge as we know it today was developed in 16th-century France. It was initially designed as a statement piece for the French aristocracy and was typically made of wood or other luxurious materials, such as gilded bronze or painted finishes.

By the 18th century, the chaise lounge had become more popular and was being used in a variety of settings, including bedrooms, studies, and outdoor spaces. In the 19th century, designers began experimenting with new materials and styles, leading to the creation of chaise lounges made of wicker, metal, and other materials.

The chaise lounge became particularly popular in the early 20th century, with designers such as Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer creating modernist versions that emphasized form and function. The chaise lounge was also a popular subject in art and photography, with many iconic images depicting lounging models or actresses reclining on a chaise.

Today, the chaise lounge remains a popular and versatile piece of furniture that can be found in a variety of styles, materials, and colors. Whether used indoors or outdoors, as a standalone piece or as part of a larger seating arrangement, the chaise lounge continues to capture the imagination of designers and consumers alike.
