How to Time Your Container Order Around Australia’s Biggest Retail Peaks
After more than five decades of supplying furniture retailers through every major sales event on the Australian calendar, we have learned one truth above all others:
Timing your container order correctly is the difference between a full showroom and an empty floor.
Here is what we know works:
✔️ Work backwards from the sales event, not forwards from the order date.
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year do not wait for late shipments. Container lead times from overseas typically run eight to twelve weeks. That means orders for the November and December peak need to be placed no later than August, and ideally in July to allow for any delays at port or in customs clearance.
✔️ Build in a buffer for the unexpected.
Shipping schedules shift. Port congestion happens. Customs holds occur without warning. Retailers who plan for a three-week buffer between expected arrival and the sales event consistently outperform those who cut it close. Stock that arrives on the floor two weeks before demand peaks sells. Stock that arrives two weeks after the peak does not.
✔️ Pre-sell and pre-display before the container lands.
The retailers who make the most of peak season are the ones who have already briefed their sales teams, set up display spaces, and begun promoting key lines before the container even docks. When the stock arrives, they are ready to move it immediately.
✔️ Communicate early with your wholesale partner.
The earlier you confirm your order, the better your access to the right products at the right price. Leaving it late often means settling for what is left rather than what your customers actually want.
Peak season rewards preparation and punishes delay.
At Berton Furniture, we help retailers plan their container orders around the Australian retail calendar so their stock arrives on the floor exactly when their customers are ready to buy 💡
